{"id":1977,"date":"2011-02-11T10:31:22","date_gmt":"2011-02-11T10:31:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/altlep.wordpress.com\/?p=12"},"modified":"2011-02-11T10:31:22","modified_gmt":"2011-02-11T10:31:22","slug":"why-an-alternative-lep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/realisedevelopment.net\/index.php\/2011\/02\/11\/why-an-alternative-lep\/","title":{"rendered":"Why An Alternative LEP?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is\u00a0early\u00a0days for\u00a0Local\u00a0Enterprise Partnerships. \u00a0And I wish them well.<\/p>\n<p>But the\u00a0early\u00a0signs are that they are made up, more or less, of the usual suspects, working in the usual ways, making the usual assumptions &#8211; and may\u00a0produce the\u00a0usual results.<\/p>\n<p>So following conversation with a few people who seemed to share these\u00a0concerns\u00a0and expressed an interest, here is <strong>The Alternative LEP<\/strong>. \u00a0A place where the usual and not so usual suspects can share ideas, work in unusual ways, explore the potential of starting from fresh assumptions and discuss the kind of economic and regeneration\u00a0activities\u00a0that might be developed as a result.<\/p>\n<p>What if LEPs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>worked to ensure that the economy existed to serve people (all of us) instead of us existing to serve it?<\/li>\n<li>refused to look at the economy in isolation but as one part of a much wider system including people and the environment?<\/li>\n<li>really\u00a0embraced\u00a0the\u00a0debate\u00a0around the challenges of continued economic growth and its impact on the environment &#8211; instead of presenting economic growth as entirely a good thing?<\/li>\n<li>explored and developed enterprise as a quality of communities, localities and people instead of focussing on old school economic measures such as GDP?<\/li>\n<li>focused on investment in\u00a0local\u00a0people and communities rather than attracting investors from elsewhere \u2013 a preference for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/localenterprise.wordpress.com\/2008\/10\/30\/economic-gardening-or-economic-hunting\/\">economic gardening over economic hunting<\/a><\/li>\n<li>recognised the\u00a0historical\u00a0failure of such organisations to successfully plan the economy and provide the infrastructure required \u2013 and instead of trying to \u2018take charge of the local economy\u2019, \u2018facilitated\u00a0local\u00a0enterprise\u2019?<\/li>\n<li>understood that we can\u2019t \u2018develop\u2019 economies \u00a0or communities. \u00a0But we can help people to develop \u00a0&#8211;\u00a0and people are great at building both community and the economy \u2013 given the chance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If we started from these assumptions perhaps we would commission some very different activity&#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"SPOSTARBUST-Related-Posts\"><ul class=\"entry-meta\"><li class=\"SPOSTARBUST-Related-Post\"><a title=\"A Way Forward for Communities?\" href=\"http:\/\/realisedevelopment.net\/index.php\/2012\/02\/16\/a-way-forward-for-communities\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">A Way Forward for Communities?<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"SPOSTARBUST-Related-Post\"><a title=\"Recovering the Economy\" href=\"http:\/\/realisedevelopment.net\/index.php\/2011\/09\/27\/recovering-the-economy\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">Recovering the Economy<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"SPOSTARBUST-Related-Post\"><a title=\"Governments don&#8217;t rule the world; Goldman Sachs do&#8230;\" href=\"http:\/\/realisedevelopment.net\/index.php\/2011\/09\/27\/governments-dont-rule-the-world-goldman-sachs-do\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">Governments don&#8217;t rule the world; Goldman Sachs do&#8230;<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"SPOSTARBUST-Related-Post\"><a title=\"The Leeds LEP Summit&#8230;\" href=\"http:\/\/realisedevelopment.net\/index.php\/2011\/09\/12\/the-leeds-lep-summit\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">The Leeds LEP Summit&#8230;<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"SPOSTARBUST-Related-Post\"><a title=\"A Compass for LEPs&#8230;\" href=\"http:\/\/realisedevelopment.net\/index.php\/2011\/07\/21\/a-compass-for-leps\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">A Compass for LEPs&#8230;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is\u00a0early\u00a0days for\u00a0Local\u00a0Enterprise Partnerships. \u00a0And I wish them well.
