{"id":2107,"date":"2012-02-13T17:05:06","date_gmt":"2012-02-13T17:05:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/realisedevelopment.net\/?p=2107"},"modified":"2012-02-13T17:05:06","modified_gmt":"2012-02-13T17:05:06","slug":"towards-a-community-advertising-network-for-leeds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/realisedevelopment.net\/index.php\/2012\/02\/13\/towards-a-community-advertising-network-for-leeds\/","title":{"rendered":"Towards A Community Advertising Network for Leeds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, here is the idea, developed by Paul Burr of The CAN-Do Project (CAN= Community Advertising Network).<\/p>\n<p>We set up a Leeds community group to run an advertising business. \u00a0We put up roadside hoardings on land on some of the prime\u00a0thoroughfares\u00a0in our city, having got the permission of land owners and applied for planning permission where necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Advertising on the sites gets sold to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>National and multi-national corporations at premium rates<\/li>\n<li>Local small businesses at heavily\u00a0discounted\u00a0rates &#8211; with further discounts available for those that agree to take on a trainee, provide a placement or\u00a0take on a mentoring role for example (wouldn&#8217;t\u00a0it be nice to see\u00a0local\u00a0small\u00a0businesses\u00a0advertising on prime sites as well as the big corporates and multi-nationals?)<\/li>\n<li>Local social enterprises, charities and other good causes who help to manage the network get to a limited number of adverts free of charge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Surplus revenues get re-invested back into the\u00a0local\u00a0community, for example to fund a micro-enterprise startup or loan fund, or to fund community and youth workers perhaps.<\/p>\n<p>A great way of helping to use assets in the community (roadside land, and passing traffic) to\u00a0realise\u00a0community development through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>direct income generation<\/li>\n<li>affordable advertising for local businesses<\/li>\n<li>creating jobs in\u00a0administration\u00a0of the scheme, erecting hoardings and posting up adverts<\/li>\n<li>building community capacity by encouraging mentoring and other social goods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Paul&#8217;s research suggests that it might be possible to generate several hundreds of thousands of pounds in advertising for\u00a0local\u00a0businesses\u00a0and third sector\u00a0organisations\u00a0as well as\u00a0substantial\u00a0cash revenues\u00a0each year.<\/p>\n<h3>Who could possibly object?<\/h3>\n<p>It seems that there are several major private sector providers of roadside hoardings in Leeds, who pay rent to the council for access to prime sites. \u00a0Paul&#8217;s\u00a0proposal\u00a0could see money retained in the community where the hoardings are\u00a0placed\u00a0rather than going to the council, and could see a new competitor to the private sector suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>I am sure too that many will protest against the positioning of further advertising hoardings across the city. \u00a0These things are not always easy on the eye &#8211; but this would have to be off-set against the benefits.<\/p>\n<h3>Next Steps<\/h3>\n<p>A group of us, including LS14 Trust and SLATE \u00a0have already met to explore the potential of such a Community Advertising Network in Leeds and see enough potential to explore the idea further. \u00a0If you would like to<a title=\"Leeds Community Advertising Network Exploratory Meeting\" href=\"http:\/\/cando.eventbrite.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0join us to discuss the idea further.
