{"id":561,"date":"2009-03-20T08:41:16","date_gmt":"2009-03-20T08:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localenterprise.wordpress.com\/?p=561"},"modified":"2009-03-20T08:41:16","modified_gmt":"2009-03-20T08:41:16","slug":"the-creative-entrepreneur-wow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/realisedevelopment.net\/index.php\/2009\/03\/20\/the-creative-entrepreneur-wow\/","title":{"rendered":"The Creative Entrepreneur &#8211; WOW"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Good networking event last night hosted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wylln.ac.uk\/about_us\">WYLLN<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmedia.org.uk\/\">bmedia<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntileeds.co.uk\">nti<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Explored a couple of questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In a fast-moving industry dominated by freelancers and SMEs, what does \u2018Leadership &amp; Management\u2019 really mean?<\/li>\n<li>Why is it important?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More prosaically put &#8211; why are so many creative\/digital businesses poor at establishing basic business processes, managing other creatives and getting paid?<\/p>\n<p>My opinion?<\/p>\n<p>It is because we (the business support industry) insist on training digitals and creatives (and every other entrepreneur) that they have to do all this stuff if they are going to be successful in business.<\/p>\n<p>And this is, frankly, nonsense.<\/p>\n<p>It damages people.<\/p>\n<p>It distorts them from their true purpose.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge is being comfortable with who you are, what you want to become and what you want to spend your time doing.\u00a0 Enterprise is a long term process of becoming, of exploring and realising potential.\u00a0 And then finding people you can work with to do the rest.\u00a0 It is about negotiating your self interest and building the right team.\u00a0<strong> All really successful business are team starts. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Why don&#8217;t we teach this?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Find out what you love.\u00a0 What you really love. Something that will keep you engaged for years while you strive for mastery and excellence.<\/li>\n<li>Get really good at it and keep getting better.\u00a0 Specialise.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the importance of other things that you do not love.\u00a0 Learn to respect and value them.\u00a0 If you are a creative\/digerati this is likely to be management, sales and marketing. (Most creatives and digitals have spent many hours over many years working alone honing their craft.\u00a0 They tend to be introverted and uncomfortable with conflict.\u00a0 Hence the aversion to management, sales and marketing.)<\/li>\n<li>Find other people who love doing the bits you hate.\u00a0 Form a team.\u00a0 A strong team. Form it with care.
