{"id":749,"date":"2009-03-23T09:31:38","date_gmt":"2009-03-23T08:31:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/progmanager.wordpress.com\/?p=749"},"modified":"2009-03-23T09:31:38","modified_gmt":"2009-03-23T08:31:38","slug":"cicero-and-the-progressive-manager","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/realisedevelopment.net\/index.php\/2009\/03\/23\/cicero-and-the-progressive-manager\/","title":{"rendered":"Cicero and the Progressive Manager"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-750\" title=\"cicero\" src=\"http:\/\/progmanager.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/03\/cicero.gif?w=215\" alt=\"cicero\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;If you wish to persuade me, you must think my thoughts, feel my feelings, and speak my words.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align:right;\">Cicero &#8211; Roman statesman<\/p>\n<p>Hat tip to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allthingsworkplace.com\/2009\/03\/can-you-pass-the-cicero-persuasion-test.html\">Steve Roesler<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s get this straight from the start.\u00a0 In my book persuading DOES NOT involve influencing employees to do something that is not in their best interest.\u00a0 It involves helping them to see why the action proposed IS in their best interest.\u00a0 Or to create a plan that we can all see the upsides from.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thinking their thoughts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How do things look from their personal perspective &#8211; REALLY?\u00a0 Have they worked in the organisation for 10 years and never made a promotion?\u00a0 Are they more interested in the week-end than the working week?\u00a0 Let&#8217;s try to be honest with ourselves about the thinking that our latest ideas might trigger.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feeling their feelings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What do they really care about?\u00a0 What matters most to them?\u00a0 How do they feel about what matters?\u00a0 Optimistic?\u00a0 Resigned?\u00a0 Detached?\u00a0 Hopeful, fearful? DO they feel like they have to keep their head down and play it safe, or are they up for taking some risks in pursuit of greatness.\u00a0 Are they comfortable in the bureaucratic comfort zone or do they prefer the white water of the entrepreneurial mindset.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speak their words<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Are your words clear and unequivocal &#8211; or are they <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weasel_word\">weasel words<\/a> &#8211; designed to create an illusion of clear communication?\u00a0 Do you speak direclty to them clear about your own self interest and really prepared to re-negotiate it as they communicate reservations, concerns, hopes and desires?\u00a0 Are you speaking their language?\u00a0 If they are talking about fear of redundancy are you talking to those fears &#8211; honestly?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Connect or Collude<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do you really want to establish an honest connection or to collude in a pretense of communication that enable everyone to duck the real issue &#8211; ignore the 900lb gorillas?\u00a0 Do you want to connect human to human or &#8216;work mask to work mask&#8217;?
